What to expect

Through a series of guided exercises, you will

- explore hand-building methods such as coiling and pinching large organic forms

- experiment with surface using a palette of coloured slips

- use two-dimensional approaches like drawing, tracing, and collage to develop ideas and engage in a dialogue between form and surface that is personal to you (no drawing skills required)

- discover ways to generate meaningful outcomes that refresh and evolve your artistic approach

Artwork by Reyaz Badaruddin

You will be encouraged to work with spontaneity and learn to exercise your critical eye. While many experimental sculptures will emerge during the workshop, the focus is not on finished, fired objects. Instead, the emphasis is on skill-building and expanding your creative vocabulary.

About The Ceramic Artists

Élodie Alexandre is a French artist based in Andretta, Himachal Pradesh. Her primary mediums are drawing and ceramics, and she is known for creating multi-layered, narrative works that explore personal and universal themes, often oscillating between two and three dimensions.

She studied at the Cardiff School of Art & Design in Wales, UK, earning both a BA and an MA in Ceramics from Cardiff Metropolitan University. Her degree show installation received the Rising Stars Award in London. Elodie’s work has been exhibited internationally, including selections for the British Ceramics Biennial (2011), the Biennial of Ceramics in Belgium (2015), and the Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale. In 2018, she participated in the inaugural Indian Ceramics Triennale in Jaipur.

Her artistic practice is narrative in nature, inspired by experiences of displacement, memories, and everyday anecdotes. In recent years, she has explored feminist themes, using everyday objects as metaphors and investigating figurative representations from an archetypal perspective. Through her work, she witnesses and documents how her mind deals with transformation of her body – the body that gave birth, the body affected by her autoimmune skin condition. In telling stories that are deeply personal, she makes us look closer at our own relationship to our body, our own narratives and the world beyond.

Elodie is the co-founder of Atelier Lālmitti, a clay studio and ceramic centre in Andretta, known for its handmade tableware and as a hub for long-term programmes and mentorships that influence and teach a new generation of ceramic artists.

Reyaz Badaruddin is an Indian ceramic artist and painter based in Andretta, Himachal Pradesh, India. He is recognized for his innovative approach that blurs boundaries between ceramics, painting, sculpture, and utilitarian objects. His art explores the relationship between three-dimensional ceramic objects and their representation in two-dimensional paintings, often challenging traditional distinctions between art forms.

Reyaz graduated in Ceramic Design from Banaras Hindu University in 2000 and later completed an MA attachment in ceramics at Cardiff School of Art & Design, UK, through a Charles Wallace Fellowship in 2009. He is a recipient of the National Award and Junior Fellowship from the Government of India. Reyaz has apprenticed with notable artists such as Isaiah Zagar in Philadelphia and Ray Meeker at Golden Bridge Pottery in Pondicherry.

He has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions and residencies, with his works held in collections worldwide, including the Mark Rothko Art Centre (Latvia), FULE International Ceramic Museum (China), Keramik Künstler Haus (Germany) and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (India).

He is a co-curator and core group member of the Indian Ceramics Triennale, further contributing to the contemporary ceramics landscape in India.

Reyaz is the co-founder of Atelier Lālmitti, a clay studio and ceramic centre in Andretta, known for its handmade tableware and as a hub for long-term programmes and mentorships that influence and teach a new generation of ceramic artists
